Jabir Jofi narrates:
I accompanied Imam Muhammad al-Baqir (a) on a journey for Hajj. During the journey, a chukar partridge landed on the edge of the Imam’s saddle and began to chirp. When I tried to catch it, the Imam said, “Don’t, Jabir! This bird has sought refuge with us. It is complaining that a snake has been eating its chicks for the past three years. It has begged me to pray to God for the serpent’s death. So I prayed, and Almighty Allah caused the snake to die.”
We continued our journey through the night. At dawn, the Imam said, “Jabir, come down from your mount.” I dismounted, held the reins of his camel, and helped him sit down. The Imam then walked some distance to the right side of the road, where he moved the sand and said, “O God, please provide us with water for ablution, washing, and drinking.”
When the Imam moved the sand slightly, a white, round stone became visible. He removed the stone, and beneath it was a spring of water. We performed our ablution and drank until we were satiated.
As we continued our journey, we came across a date palm along the way. The Imam approached it and said, “O date palm, give us some of what God has produced within you.” Immediately, fruits appeared on the tree, and its branches lowered until we could reach them with our hands. We plucked the dates and ate until we were full.
A Bedouin traveling with us witnessed these miracles and exclaimed, “I have never seen a magician like him!”
Hearing this, Imam Muhammad al-Baqir (a) replied, “O Bedouin, do not try to falsify the truth about the Ahlul Bayt (a). We are neither sorcerers nor soothsayers. God has taught us the Beautiful Names, and when we call upon Him with these Names, He answers our prayers without fail.”
